About

How can the CO₂ emission rate of road construction materials and precast concrete be reduced through industrial carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technology ?

Population and economic growth in recent decades has led to increased industrial activity, resulting in a significant rise in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, which are responsible for major climate change. The European Union has set a goal to reduce net emissions by at least 55% by 2030 and to reach carbon neutrality by 2050.

In this context, the industrial partners of the CARBOC project have logically identified a shared interest in using CUSC (Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage) technologies to reduce the carbon footprint of their products by partially replacing cement with carbonated phases.

With this goal in mind, they have sought scientific support from the CTP and the GeMMe and PEPs laboratories at the University of Liège to explore the development of road construction materials and precast concrete components that enable industrial CO₂ sequestration and improved valorization of municipal solid waste incineration bottom ash (MIOM).

This project contributes to :

  • The development of innovative CO₂-capturing materials

  • The reduction of greenhouse gas emissions

It is a project supported by the GREENWIN cluster and funded under the PNRR recovery plan.of the recovery plan).
