The challenges surrounding water availability and quality are becoming increasingly pressing in Europe. Even in Wallonia, where water appears to be plentiful, water suppliers are already struggling in certain areas to provide the quantities of water required for economic activity, particularly during periods of peak consumption. Yet water resources are essential to industrial competitiveness and our self-sufficiency. Without water, how can we guarantee the production of goods, the operation of a growing number of data centres, energy generation, or simply food sovereignty?
Furthermore, Wallonia has announced plans to redevelop 1,500 hectares of brownfield sites for the region’s economic revitalisation, which raises a number of challenges relating to flood-prone land and water infiltration into historically polluted sites.
